Pantone, the global authority on color and provider of professional color standards for the design industries, recently released its spring 2010 fashion color report. And while garden center customers don’t necessarily head to the backyard in the latest frocks and designer baubles, they’re inevitably drawn to the best and brightest colors on the bench to plant in their gardens, so it’s important to stay up on the latest trends in fashion and color.

The theme for 2010: “splashes of sunshine,” according to Pantone “Now more than ever, women are vigilant when it comes to spending,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, in the report. “Consumers want pieces to complement what they already own. Pairing a bold color with a basic piece or freshening up their look with bright accents addresses the need for practicality, as well as fun.”

Vibrant, tropical Turquoise and Amparo Blue, a brighter, more energetic cousin to crisp navy, round out the blue family with purplish Violet. Yellow still looms large in the palette — last year, Mimosa was the color to feature — with the shimmery, greenish Aurora. And in the red family, Fusion Coral and Tomato Purée add a jolt of vibrant color. Those bursts of colorful sunshine are toned down and strengthened by “thoughtful, cautious neutrals”: Pink Champagne, a dusty rose; Tuscany, a warm beige hue; Dried Herb, a green neutral; and Eucalyptus, a timeless gray.

“Consumers have an insatiable appetite for what’s new and fun in fashion, and that is true this season as well,” said Nicole Fischelis, Macy’s fashion director, in the Pantone release. “While they may be more selective in their purchases right now, people still want to be excited and inspired by fashion. Color is arguably one of the most essential elements each season as it triggers the emotional ‘buy me’ reaction!”
