Spring Trials Day 4 — Dümmen Orange, Cohen/Hishtil/Jaldety and Windmill Nursery By Jasmina Dolce

We’re officially more than halfway through our California Spring Trials journey. Day 4 began at Edna Valley Vineyard where Dümmen Orange showcased their new introductions.

They continue to expand their perennial combinations, which looked outstanding as is but growers are given the option to mix and match varieties to create more customized mixes. We also enjoyed walking through their four new retail concepts: Savor the Flavor (herb mixes), Effortless Autumn (premium decorative containers for fall), Kinder Garden (gardening kits for families with children) and Grab & Go (step-by-step guide for creating combos).

Next, we drove down to Los Alamos where Cohen Propagation Nurseries, Hishtil Nurseries and Jaldety Nursery exhibited at a totally new trial location — Chisan Orchids. The Israeli companies seemed to enjoy having a new home where their displays were center attention. We loved smelling all the awesome new and experimental herbs by Hishtil, especially their lemony thymus.

Our final stop of the day was Windmill Nursery where Terra Nova Nurseries, Kiwi Flora and Kientzler once again exhibited. This year, J. Berry Nursery joined the group for their first Spring Trials appearance. They had some amazing shrub varieties, but one of our favorite new programs is the Hollywood hibiscus collection. These varieties’ blooms last multiple days, and they feature resistance to bacterial leaf spot.

Today, we’ll be visiting the GroLink location in Oxnard and then end our day at Ball Horticultural Company in Santa Paula. In the meantime, check out some of our favorites from Day 4 at the trials.

New Guinea impatiens ‘Wild Romance Blush Pink’
Dümmen Orange

This new full shade New Guinea impatiens boasts a rose-like appearance with a few extra petals per flower. Two colors are currently available: White and Blush Pink.

Coleus ‘Great Falls Niagara’
Dümmen Orange

Great Falls is a new series of trailing coleus. It has smaller foliage and a controlled habit — perfect in combinations. Dümmen Orange also has introduced these to the Confetti lineup as the first non-flowering component.

Scabiosa ‘Kudo White’
Hishtil Nurseries

‘Kudo Pink’ has been very successful for Hishtil, so they are now expanding the line with White. Plants have a ton of flowers, and are hardy to Zone 3.

Thunbergia ‘Arizona Rose Sensation’
Jaldety Nursery

This fast-growing climber is one of four new additions to the Arizona series. It presents an elegant look with its large, dark pink flowers and dark centers.

Verbena ‘Lapel Mickey Red Rose’
Cohen Propagation Nurseries

Mickey Red Rose adds an interesting and eye-catching bicolor to the lineup. It has a fine leaf, making it more mildew resistant. It is an early-flowering selection.

Heuchera ‘Forever Red’
Terra Nova Nurseries

This red heuchera will actually keep its color all through spring, summer and fall. It takes the heat very well, and releases one flush of cream-colored flowers.

Iberis ‘Summer Snow’
Kientzler

‘Summer Snow’ is an annual type of iberis, and it lasts the entire summer. It can be used as an alternative to lobularia or euphorbia.

Lavender ‘Meerlo’
Kiwi Flora

‘Meerlo’ is an allaardii type, which are the most heat and drought-tolerant lavenders. It is a vigorous plant with beautiful variegated, highly fragrant foliage. It sports pale blue flowers in summer.
