The Trials Trail By Tim Hodson

Greetings from California!

Team GPN is on Day 3 of our California Spring Trials adventure. We escaped the snowy weather in the Chicago area to head to the coast where we are working our way from northern part of the state down to central California over five days.

So far, Mother Nature has provided us with great weather. We’re just hoping she behaves herself for the rest of the week — but I’m not holding my breath.

We started bright and early on Saturday morning in San Juan Bautista where we visited Thompson & Morgan, Hem Genetics, Lambert, Vista Farms and Plant Source International who are exhibiting at Speedling.

After that, we headed to the three different sites in Watsonville. Stop number one was Suncrest Nurseries to see Cohen, Hishtil Nurseries, Jaldety and Nir Nurseries.

PP&L Rocks!

Our next destination on Saturday was the “Perennialpalooza” taking place at Pacific Plug & Liner. This year, PP&L is also playing host to Bailey Nurseries, the Quality Cuttings Team and the Sunset Garden Collection. The place was really rockin’.

Yesterday our day began in Gilroy at Kirigin Cellars winery where Proven Winners is exhibiting its new introductions including the new succulent line that was announced several weeks ago.

From there, we headed down the road to Syngenta Flowers to see what’s new including the newly acquired dahlia line from Verwer Dahlia BV and then to Danziger. Next, it was off to Salinas to see the latest offerings from Westhoff, PAC, Beekenkamp and Plug Connection.

Today’s agenda includes visits to Takii, Sakata and Dümmen Orange. Tomorrow we will travel to Windmill Nursery in Buellton to see J. Berry Nursery, Kientzler, Terra Nova Nurseries, Dramm, McConkey, Oasis Grower Solutions and Pelemix. We will end our day at Ball Horticultural Co. in Santa Paula.

Our Spring Trials adventure concludes on Wednesday when we will see more than 15 companies at Grolink and then finally Green Fuse Botanicals and Floranova.

Jasmina Dolce, GPN’s managing editor, is chronicling some of the highlights of each day in GPN’s Culture Connection e-newsletter. If you are not receiving the Culture Connection, click here and sign up today. gpnmag.com/signup/.

You can also follow our travels on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

We will have extended coverage of 2018 California Spring Trials in the June and July issues of GPN, so stay tuned …
