OSU Offers Online Course on Working with Latino Workforce By Tim Hodson

The Ohio State University is offering a new online course on integrating Latino and American workforce teams.

The course, Latinos in the Workforce, is open to the general public.

The program helps introduce workers, supervisors and business owners to current issues in a wide variety of workplaces where Latino immigrant workers interact with their American counterparts.

Program topics include cultural and historical aspects as well as some legal topics that come into play when working with the Latino workforce. Culture and its effect on workplace communication is an important feature of this program. Program instruction is in English although some Spanish words will be used.

Through this is online program, participants will learn through 33 modules: videos and reading materials that are posted on Canvas (Ohio State’s online learning management system).

A typical module includes a video, reading materials, a PDF file with the slides of the video and a multiple-choice quiz. When all modules are completed, participants qualify for the course certificate.

Participants advance through the modules at their own pace and can watch (and study) as many modules as they want each day and repeat the materials as many times as they want. Upon registration, participants have six months to complete the program.

Meijer to Convert All Stores to LED Lighting by 2021

As many growers make the conversion to LED lighting in their greenhouses, Michigan-based retailer is making the same move in all of its stores.  As part of its ongoing effort to increase its sustainability initiatives, Meijer plans to transition the interior lighting of its retail locations to all LED by 2021. The transition will affect all Meijer stores across the its six-state footprint in the Midwest. In 2013, Meijer introduced its first all-LED store in Beavercreek, Ohio. Meijer expects the change will reduce its lighting electrical use by as much as 50 percent annually. The LEDs being used in the investment are supplied by GE, Cooper and Phillips.
