October Opportunities By Tim Hodson

It’s hard to believe that today is the first day of October already and 2018 is already 75 percent of the way in the books. As we head into the fourth quarter and this year winds down, there is still plenty to do.

A lot is going on here at GPN so I thought I’d provide you with a little reminder of several different things that are happening this month.

The first item is the rapidly approaching deadline for submissions for the 2019 GPN/Nexus Intern of the Year scholarship. It is just two weeks from today (Oct. 15).

If you know a college student that participated in an exceptional greenhouse-related internship this year you should let that student know about this program.

The 2019 GPN/Nexus Intern of the Year will receive a check for $3,000; be featured in an article and on the cover of the January 2019 issue of GPN; and receive travel and hotel expenses to Cultivate’19 in Columbus, Ohio, next July as well as a full Cultivate’19 registration (compliments of AmericanHort).

GPN is also offering two free webinars this month — one on pest management and the other on lighting options for controlled environment agriculture.

The first webinar, “Identifying and Controlling the Top 5 Insect Pests,” will take place Oct. 18, at 2 p.m. EDT. The presenter is industry consultant Roger C. Styer, Styer’s Horticultural Consulting, Inc.

Go to http://bit.ly/PestWebinar  to learn more or to register for the Oct. 18 pest management webinar.

On Oct. 25, Neil Mattson from Cornell University, will present a webinar on “Lighting Decisions for CEA: Turning Photons into Dollars.” The webinar also will take place at 2 p.m. EDT.

You can register for the CEA lighting webinar at http://bit.ly/CEA_Webinar.

October is the perfect month for you to enjoy your pumpkin spice (fill in the blank) and spend an hour with Roger and Neil learning about pest management and CEA lighting!
