Are You Winning the Battle? By Tim Hodson

In real estate, the battle cry is all about location, location, location.

In the greenhouse, when it comes to dealing with pests, it’s all about rotation, rotation, rotation.

In the May issue of GPN, Anna V. Chapman authored an article, “It’s Whitefly Time: How to Update Your Rotation Program,” to help provide growers with insight on how to win the whitefly battle.

As Chapman says in the article, “For managing both B and Q biotype, the name of the game is keeping population numbers low and breaking the life cycle and reproduction potential of the insect.”

And to do that, you need to develop the right rotation program for your specific operations and crops.

She says one of the keys to a good integrated pest management program, is to continually monitor your crops and to send whitefly samples to a lab for identification “to help guide your selection of products for rotation” and hopefully decrease the number of needed applications to keep the pesky pests under control.

She recommends that growers use at least three products in their rotation and don’t apply more than two sequential applications before rotating.

Are you winning the whitefly battle in your greenhouses? Remember, it is all about rotation, rotation, rotation!
