California Association of Nurseries restores historic name amid advocacy focus
Plant California Alliance has rebranded as the California Association of Nurseries, returning to its historic name while expanding advocacy efforts.
The California nursery industry organization formerly known as Plant California Alliance has changed its name to the California Association of Nurseries (CAN), marking a return to its historic identity while continuing its advocacy work on behalf of growers and nurseries.
The organization announced the rebrand May 13, saying the new name better reflects its mission and reduces confusion created by the previous name and acronym. John Keller, chairman of CAN, said the organization found itself frequently explaining the Plant California Alliance name and that returning to California Association of Nurseries provides greater clarity.
The association said its policy priorities include participation in California’s plastics regulations, collaboration with state and regional water boards, and advocacy at the State Capitol. Emily Rooney, executive director of CAN, said industry engagement in statewide policy discussions is increasingly important.
CAN also hired Lydia Nattey as a part-time contractor to support program and grant execution. According to the organization, Nattey has more than a decade of combined experience in workforce development, grant administration and public affairs.
Founded in June 1911, the California Association of Nurseries was established to address issues including nursery stock standards, quarantines and inspections. Today, the nursery and floriculture sector accounts for 7.5% of California farm sales, according to the organization.
CAN became a founding member of the Agricultural Council of California (Ag Council) in 1919. The organization said its transition to Ag Council management in 2025 reflects its continued focus on industry advocacy while maintaining its longstanding mission of representing California nurseries and growers.
