HRI Announces 2012 Scholarship RecipientsSource: The Horticulture Research Institute

Five students have received scholarships sponsored by the Horticulture Research Institute.

The Horticulture Research Institute (HRI) has awarded scholarships to five students pursuing degrees in the horticulture field.

The 2012 Carville M. Akehurst Memorial Scholarships, each in the sum of $2,000, were awarded to Leah Comerci and Stephanie Marino.

Established in 2002, the Carville M. Akehurst Memorial Scholarship serves to memorialize Akehurst, who was one of the founders of the Mid-Atlantic Nursery Trade Show Inc., and to support the future success of the horticulture industry through education.

The 2012 Spring Meadow Nursery Scholarship of $2,000 was awarded to Allison Jones, a graduate student at Michigan State University. Jones graduated from the university with a Bachelor of Science degree in horticulture, and is currently pursuing a Master of Science degree in horticulture with a focus on horticulture marketing.

The Spring Meadow Scholarship Fund was created in 1999 to help aspiring students from across the country obtain a degree in horticulture.

The 2012 Timothy S. and Palmer W. Bigelow, Jr. Scholarship of $3,000 went to Renee LaGue, a graduate student at the Conway School of Landscape Design. LaGue is pursuing a Master of Science degree in sustainable landscape design.

The 2012 Muggest Scholarship of $2,500 was awarded to Justin Menke, a senior at the University of Kentucky majoring in landscape architecture.
