Indiana State Senator Introduces Cannabis Legalization Bills
Indiana State Senator Karen Tallian has introduced two bills that would legalize and regulate cannabis in the state. Sen. Tallian announced the authoring of the bills, SB 87 and SB 223, on social media.
“Arrests for marijuana possession made up 45% of all drug arrests from 2010-2018 in Indiana,” a Facebook post by Sen. Tallian reads. “Contextually, Black Hoosiers are 3.5x more likely to be arrested for the possession of marijuana. Our neighboring states have made efforts to address unjust marijuana laws, and it’s time for us to do the same.”

SB 87 would establish a cannabis compliance commission to regulate the growth, processing, distribution and sale of all forms of legal cannabis in Indiana, including industrial hemp and low THC hemp extract. Under current law, the offense of possession of marijuana can be for any amount of marijuana. SB 223 would increase that amount to more than two ounces of marijuana. The bill would also repeal the offense of possession of marijuana, hash oil, hashish, or salvia as a Level 6 felony.
