Project EverGreen Scholarship Winners AnnouncedSource: Project EverGreen

The winners of the 2007 Because Green Matters scholarships have been announced by Project EverGreen. These $2,500 awards are designed to assist students preparing for a career in the green industry. Winners this year were John Eastman, Michigan State University (MSU) and Dustin Potts, Purdue University.

Den Gardner, executive director of Project Evergreen, said, “Both winners have demonstrated their ability to combine high scholastic standing with strong participation and leadership in student activities – all while showing initiative to gain practical experience in career-related employment. They are well-suited to advance the role in which the green industry plays in enhancing our environment and our economy,” as he announced the awards.

John Eastman is working toward a degree in horticulture at MSU, with an emphasis on landscape design and building and plans to graduate in 2008. He has had a long interest in landscaping and has become a Certified Landscape Technician and a Certified Pesticide Applicator.

Dustin Potts will graduate in 2008 with a major in horticulture and landscape architecture. He has participated in Purdue’s Study Abroad program and has gained work experience at the Mesker Park Zoo, Evansville and the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Entries are now open for next year’s Because Green Matters scholarship. Students must major or minor in a green industry related field and eligibility, determined by a committee made up of Project EverGreen’s Board of Directors, is open to two- to four-year program students attending institutions offering turf, landscape and golf management curriculums.
