Annuals: Preparing ahead of the growing season
Here are some tips from Geoffrey Njue, Extension educator at University of Massachusetts, Amherst, to help growers prepare for the start of the annual growing season.
It is important to start clean. Remove weeds in and around the greenhouse, remove plant residues and clean out dirt, algae and dust, and sanitize the greenhouse before the start of the season.
Growing media selection is important ahead of the growing season. Select media with high-quality, consistent physical properties. Consider your crops requirements, production time and irrigation system.
Growers should remember to check growing media pH and EC before they start growing in the media. If the pH is outside acceptable range, contact your media supplier.
Inspect all incoming new plant material, cuttings, liners and plugs and place them in an isolated area to be observed for a short period of time prior to moving them into the main greenhouse to ensure there are no issues with diseases or insects.
