Culture Report: ‘Sonic Bloom Punch’ weigela
Proven Winners ColorChoice ‘Sonic Bloom Punch’ weigela is a vibrant shrub with a heavy set of fuchsia-pink flowers from spring through fall. Known for its extended bloom period, it attracts pollinators like hummingbirds and bees, adding yearround color to landscapes.
Compact and sturdy, it thrives in full sun to partial shade and is versatile for borders, mass plantings or as a specimen plant. With its attractive foliage and continuous blooms, ‘Sonic Bloom Punch’ is an excellent choice for those seeking a long-lasting, low-maintenance shrub.
The Sonic Bloom weigela line was created through hybridization and breeding techniques to enhance flower production and adaptability. The breeding goal was to produce shrubs that could tolerate a range of environmental conditions while improving rebloom and the life of blooms.
Unlike many older weigela varieties — which only bloom from late spring to early summer — the Sonic Bloom series was specifically designed to rebloom all season long, so growers can cycle prune a percentage of the crop at two-week intervals and always have fresh plants with a heavy bloom to ship.
The plants also feature more compact, manageable sizes, making them suitable for smaller gardens, containers or mixed shrub plantings. The series is also known for its ease of care and adaptability to different soil types and light conditions.

PRODUCTION
pH and EC
‘Sonic Bloom Punch’ weigela has average nutrient needs. It’s a highly adaptable plant, but optimal conditions are a well-draining growing medium with a pH level of 5.6 to 6.2.
Young plants or cuttings benefit from a lower EC, so monitoring is crucial because it helps to ensure cuttings or seedlings are receiving the right amount of nutrients without the risk of over- or under-fertilizing. This series of weigela will develop best with an EC (2:1 extract) at 0.6 to 0.9.
Light and temperature
Temperatures while rooting out plants should range from 65° F to 72° F. Finished containers can be overwintered in a polyhouse — white 40% to 70% opacity with no heat where hardy. The Sonic Bloom series is hardy in USDA Zones 4 through 8.
Watering
Weigela prefers moderate watering and is somewhat droughttolerant once established. Pruning The first year it is potted, sheer 2 to 3 times to build a body. Growers and nurseries can cycle prune a percentage of the finished crop at 2-week intervals to always have a supply of fresh plants with heavy bloom. Stop pruning in late summer.
FINISHING
Sonic Bloom weigela is propagated from unrooted cuttings and sold as liners to finish growers. Liners are available from Spring Meadow Nursery as part of the Proven Winners ColorChoice brand. Finish times will vary depending upon climate and cultural techniques.
Finished weigela thrive in full sun but can also tolerate partial shade. For the best flowering and overall health, it should receive at least 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. While it can handle some shade, especially in hotter climates, it will produce the most vibrant blooms and dense growth in full sun.
