The ‘Staff’ That Dreams Are Made of … By Tim Hodson

Last month, Lowe’s and the Home Depot announced their hiring plans for Spring 2015. And they are big! The home improvement retailers plan to hire more than 110,000 permanent part-time and seasonal associates to handle their busiest season of the year, one that is near and dear to our industry.

Lowe’s plans to hire 30,000 people at its U.S. stores and another 2,000 employees for its stores in Canada. The Home Depot plans to add more than 80,000 new hires to its payroll this spring. The company is recruiting for positions both in its stores and distribution facilities across the country.

The home improvement retailers are bullish on spring this year. Hopefully, Mother Nature will cooperate and keep all of those new hires busy in the garden center aisles all season long.

How are your spring hiring plans progressing? Are you as optimistic as Lowe’s and the Home Depot? Drop me a line at thodson@sgcmail.com and let me know.

Designed to Respond

If you subscribe to any of GPN’s electronic newsletters (GPN Weekly, Culture Connection and Hydroponics Report) you may have noticed something a little different about them recently.

At the beginning of the year we redesigned the e-newsletters using responsive web design to make it easier to read and navigate our electronic newsletter content.

Responsive design provides an optimal viewing experience no matter what device you use when you read the newsletters — from a 27-inch computer monitor, to a tablet to the 4-inch screen on your smartphone.

The look of our newsletters now “responds” to your device. With responsive web design our newsletters will detect your screen size and orientation and then change the layout accordingly.

So if you are on the go and receive one of our e-newsletters in your inbox on your mobile device, don’t wait until you get back to your computer to read it. Instead, go ahead and click on it on your phone or tablet and catch up on the latest horticulture industry news.

If you are NOT receiving our e-newsletters but would like to, just go to www.gpnmag.com and click on the Newsletter button in the upper right hand corner.
