An interesting statistic we uncovered following yesterday’s elections: one in four Americans now lives in a state where cannabis is fully legal for all adults.
In Michigan, voters approved marijuana legalization by a margin of 56 percent to 44 percent, with more than 90 percent of precincts reporting. The measure will now allow adults over the age of 21 to possess, grow and use small amounts of marijuana legally.
Voters in Utah, one of the nation’s most conservative states, approved legalization of medical marijuana. With nearly three-quarters of precincts reporting, the medical cannabis measure was leading by a margin of 53 percent to 47 percent. Qualified patients with physician approval will be issued cards and be allowed to purchase 2 ounces of medical marijuana or products containing 10 grams of CBD or THC from a dispensary during any two-week period.
Missouri voters have approved one of three medical marijuana measures on the state’s ballot. Amendment 2 passed by a margin of 66 percent to 34 percent. Under the new law, qualified patients with physician’s approval will receive cards that will allow them and their registered caregivers to grow up to six marijuana plants and purchase at least 4 ounces of cannabis from dispensaries on a monthly basis.
Voters in North Dakota rejected a marijuana legalization measure, which failed by a margin of 41 percent in favor to 59 percent against. Unlike laws approved in other states, North Dakota’s initiative would have set no limit on the amount of marijuana that people could possess or cultivate. It outlined no rules or regulations for the industry. Two years ago, the state did approve a medical cannabis initiative, which is still in place.
