California authorities crack down on illegal pesticide use in hemp production

The California Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) and the Sutter County Agricultural Commissioner (CAC) have taken decisive action against a hemp grower for illegal pesticide use. Following an investigation, hemp grown in 22 greenhouses was ordered to be destroyed due to the presence of illegal pesticide residues.

The investigation, which began in May 2024, involved routine inspections at greenhouses operated by Bin Zheng in Sutter County. Tests revealed that hemp from the greenhouses contained pesticide residues not approved for use on the crop. In response, DPR reached a settlement with Zheng, who agreed to voluntarily destroy the contaminated hemp in July 2024, under the oversight of DPR and the Sutter CAC.

Additionally, Zheng was fined by the Sutter CAC for violating pesticide regulations. DPR Director Julie Henderson emphasized the importance of collaborative enforcement to protect public health and the environment. Sutter CAC Lisa Herbert praised the diligence of local inspectors in upholding California’s stringent pesticide regulations.
