Estabrook’s opens sustainable production greenhouse in Maine

Estabrook’s has completed construction of a 55,000-square-foot production greenhouse in Pownal, Maine, significantly expanding its growing capacity while incorporating sustainable systems and advanced horticultural technology.

Designed for efficiency, the facility features automated irrigation, high-transmission glass, and low-emission heating powered by propane. An onsite two-million-gallon pond captures and recycles rainwater, reducing dependence on outside water sources.

The new greenhouse supports year-round growing of annuals, perennials, herbs and vegetables. Plants will be distributed to Estabrook’s stores in Yarmouth and Kennebunk, as well as to landscape professionals and independent retailers across New England.

EHR coordinated the structure and systems for the project in partnership with several horticulture vendors, including Argus Controls, BioTherm Solutions, Dramm Corporation and ErfGoed.

“This project reflects exactly what’s possible when independent growers, suppliers and brokers collaborate with purpose,” said David Toohey, EHR regional sales representative.

Tom Estabrook, president of Estabrook’s, said the facility will help the company meet growing regional demand for locally grown plants.

“This facility allows us to meet this growing demand by doubling our capacity while reducing the amount of time we need to grow market-ready plants,” Estabrook said.

A ribbon cutting and grand opening celebration will be held June 23, 2025, to mark the completion of the project.

The investment reflects Estabrook’s long-term commitment to sustainable growth and continued service to both retail and wholesale customers across the region.
