Last week, Hermann Engelmann, the founder of Hermann Engelmann Greenhouses Inc., in Apopka, Fla, passed away peacefully in his sleep.

The company is one of the largest producers of indoor houseplants in the world.

Hermann founded the company in 1971 after emigrating from Germany in 1960. He created a number of innovations that revolutionized the indoor houseplants industry in the United States. The most known one was his strong focus on consumer branding.

The company’s signature, Exotic Angel Plants, is currently sold at more than 11,000 retail stores in North America.

Hermann’s love and passion for plants blossomed early in his youth — his family comes from six generations of horticulturists. His vision, however, was quite unique. He started his business by personally delivering Exotic Angel Plants to stores in New York and New Jersey.

His philosophy was simple: “Never overload the stores, never compromise on quality, never forget to impress the consumer and always love your product.”

Hermann Engelmann has been enjoying a peaceful retirement during the last 15 years. However, his influence and guidance were always present. The company continues forward with his son, Wolfgang Engelmann, at the helm.

The company is requesting privacy during this time, but knows that many people would like to express well-wishes to honor Hermann. This can best be achieved through the company’s official Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/EAPlants
