IFPA urges swift action on farm bill priorities

Following the U.S. election results, the International Fresh Produce Association (IFPA) outlined its policy priorities as the new administration takes office. Former President Donald Trump’s return to the White House and changes in Congress mark a pivotal moment for IFPA members, who are urging swift action on the farm bill.

In a statement, IFPA CEO Cathy Burns emphasized the need for legislation that addresses evolving agricultural needs. “Congress must take swift action to pass a new, inclusive farm bill that addresses the evolving needs of U.S. agriculture,” Burns said.

With over 80% of current farm bill funding directed to nutrition programs, IFPA calls for expanded access to fresh produce, highlighting that only one in ten Americans meet recommended fruit and vegetable intake.

IFPA also pointed to critical labor shortages affecting growers. The H-2A program, a primary labor source for produce growers, requires reform to provide stable, affordable labor.

IFPA’s FreshPAC will hold a post-election analysis webinar featuring Amy Walter of the Cook Political Report to explore potential policy impacts on agriculture.
