Marvin Miller To Receive SGC AwardSource: Southeast Greenhouse Conference

The Board of Directors of the Southeast Greenhouse Conference recently announced that Marvin N. Miller will be awarded the 2007 Horticulture Initiative Award in recognition of his significant contributions to the floriculture industry.

Currently a market research manager at Ball Horticultural Company, Miller says, “The focus of my market research efforts involves researching the structure, conduct and performance of the horticulture industry, with current emphasis on North American floriculture. I travel extensively, visiting both greenhouses and retail establishments. I frequently write about and speak on industry trends affecting our industry.”

Miller, a native of Baltimore, Md., earned his Doctor of Philosophy in Food and Resource Economics from the University of Florida. He received both his B.S. in Horticulture and M.S. in Agricultural Science from Purdue University. His thesis, “Consumer Preferences For and Attitudes Toward Cut Flower Items in Supermarkets” was well received, earning him the distinction of being a research pioneer in floriculture mass marketing.

Since 2005, Miller has served as the President of the Board of Directors of America in Bloom. He is also on the Board of Directors of OFA, An Association of Floriculture Professionals, as well as Seeley Conference, Cornell University’s Department of Horticulture. Additionally, he is a member of the Purdue University College of Agriculture Dean’s Advisory Committee, the Society of American Florists’ Government Relations Committee and the Society of American Florists/U.S. Department of Agriculture, Floriculture Statistics Task Force.

In 2005, Purdue University Horticulture Program awarded Miller their Distinguished Alumni Award. He has also earned the Society of American Florists’ Presidential Award.

The Southeast Greenhouse Conference will take place June 20-23, 2007, in Greenville, S.C. For more information go to www.sgcts.org.
