MHA Nation opens greenhouse to boost food access

The Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation in North Dakota has opened Phase 1 of its Native Green Grow greenhouse, or NG2, marking a major step toward food sovereignty and sustainable agriculture.

The project will have its grand opening this summer.

The first phase includes a 3.3-acre facility now harvesting lettuce year-round. When fully completed in Phase 4, the operation will span 14.5 acres, making it one of the largest greenhouses in the world with enough glass to cover seven football fields.

NG2 is part of the MHA Nation’s broader initiative to grow traditional foods and support its historic farming culture. The greenhouse will serve both tribal members and surrounding communities.

In addition to its scale and mission, NG2 is powered by an innovative energy system that captures flare gas from nearby oil fields. The system reduces emissions while providing heat and energy to support crop production throughout all seasons.

The initiative reflects a growing trend among tribal nations and growers to invest in greenhouse technology as a tool for year-round local food production and environmental stewardship.
