RHP certifies Klasmann-Deilmann sphagnum substrate for horticulture
RHP certifies renewable sphagnum substrate from Klasmann-Deilmann for greenhouse growing. Learn how this impacts your growing media strategy and see where to source certified materials.
RHP has awarded its horticultural quality mark to sphagnum from protected cultivation for the first time, recognizing Klasmann-Deilmann’s substrate component Sphaxx.
The certificate was presented during IPM in Essen, after RHP developed new requirements for sphagnum and received approval from its Technical Committee. The product then underwent testing and verification to meet the standards of the RHP product certification system.
According to RHP, the certified sphagnum meets strict chemical, physical and phytosanitary criteria and is produced under controlled conditions to ensure uniform quality and traceability across the supply chain. The certification covers both the raw material and the full production process.

Sphaxx is cultivated under glass and is positioned as a renewable alternative to peat-based materials for use in professional growing media. The product is intended for horticultural and greenhouse operations seeking consistent substrates while reducing reliance on nonrenewable raw materials.
At the event, RHP Operational Director Marco Zevenhoven presented the certificate to Bernd Dreyer, product manager for Sphaxx.
“We are proud of the RHP quality mark for our sphagnum,” said Bernd Dreyer.
Zevenhoven said the number of raw materials used in substrate production is increasing and that certification helps ensure performance and safety for growers. Moritz Böcking, managing director of the Klasmann-Deilmann Group, said the company is expanding its use of renewable raw materials while maintaining horticultural performance.
