Sustainabloom releases sustainability planning template for florists
Sustainabloom has released a free Sustainability Planning Template for Retail Florists to help businesses create measurable sustainability plans based on current practices and improvement goals.
The tool was developed with input from floral businesses and industry experts, reflecting both scientific research and practical challenges. Sustainabloom said an industry-wide survey earlier this year showed that structured sustainability planning is an emerging focus for floriculture businesses, including those supplying greenhouse-grown crops.
“Many businesses want to be more sustainable but don’t know where to start,” said Kevin McCarthy, president and CEO of Family Flowers. “This new template changes that. It gives florists a clear, practical roadmap that’s flexible enough to fit their needs and powerful enough to inspire meaningful change.”
The template uses a five-part framework known as FLOWS, which guides users in evaluating Flowers, Location, Operations, Waste and Supply Chain. Florists can document practices, identify opportunities and track progress through a suggested six-month timeline. The approach may support greenhouse growers who maintain retail components or provide supply-chain transparency for customers.
Amanda Solliday, lead project researcher from NC State University, said the tool was shaped by extensive industry feedback and real-world testing. She called the final resource “a living tool: one that grows with the industry and helps every business make progress at its own pace.”
The template is part of Sustainabloom’s broader suite of educational tools, with versions for other industry segments currently in development. The resource is available for free download on Sustainabloom’s website.
