The University of Florida IFAS Extension Greenhouse Online Training program will offer its Substrates for Container-Grown Plants course June 1-26.

The online course covers the science of substrates, also known as potting mix or growing media, with a focus on water and air availability for container-grown plants. It is designed for people with some experience or entry university-level knowledge who work in production, technical or sales roles for greenhouse and nursery crops.

The course is taught by Loren Oki, Ph.D., professor emeritus at the University of California, and Jeb Fields, Ph.D., assistant professor at the University of Florida. It is also a requirement for the Root Zone Expert program.

The course includes eight learning modules, with two new modules activated each week. Materials are fully online and available at any time, including pre-recorded videos, quizzes and an interactive discussion board with Oki and Fields. The typical time commitment is about 5 hours per week.

The course is offered in English and Spanish. For more information, email greenhousetraining@ifas.ufl.edu or visit hos.ifas.ufl.edu/training/.
