USDA program supports specialty crop growers

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has launched the Marketing Assistance for Specialty Crops (MASC) program, providing $2 billion in direct payments to specialty crop producers, including floriculture businesses. Eligible growers can receive up to $125,000 per applicant to address rising costs and improve market access.

This marks only the second time the USDA has offered direct financial aid to the floral industry, following advocacy efforts by the Society of American Florists during the 2020 pandemic.

“We’re thrilled that floriculture growers are once again recognized as essential contributors to the agricultural economy,” said SAF CEO Kate Penn.

MASC supports growers of perishable crops such as fruits, vegetables, and nursery plants. Aid addresses costs related to specialized handling, transportation, and labor.

Applications are open until Jan. 8, 2025. Producers must have a share in the crop’s production risk and plan to sell specialty crops in 2025. Payments are based on either 2025 sales or expected sales for new producers.

For more information and application details, visit the USDA’s MASC webpage or contact a local Farm Service Agency office.
