Lily was born in a refugee camp in Indonesia and her parents immigrated to the U.S. from Vietnam. To lessen the financial burden on the family, she worked full-time while getting her college degree.

When she was younger, Lily played viola in the youth symphony orchestra while also practicing taekwondo at the same time.
