Following is a breakdown of the states where cannabis is legal for recreational and/or medical purposes.
The 2020 election was big for cannabis. A measure legalizing medical cannabis was approved in Mississippi. Voters in South Dakota approved two separate measures, one legalizing medical cannabis and the other legalizing recreational cannabis. Measures legalizing recreational cannabis were also approved in Arizona, New Jersey, and Montana.
Since then, the cannabis industry has continued with the momentum pushing for legalization and reform. The following states approved measures related to cannabis in 2021:
- New York (recreational)
- New Mexico (recreational)
- Connecticut (recreational)
- Alabama (medical)
Mississippi is the latest state to take action on cannabis, with Gov. Tate Reeve signing the Mississippi Medical Cannabis Act into law on Feb. 2, 2022.
