Editor’s letter: Events and new varieties By Heather Machovina

The 2024 California Spring Trials event is so close! This month, many of us will be absorbing the eye candy of new introductions and improved genetics breeders will offer in 2025. So many colors, textures and changes to learn about from more than 30 breeders and I can’t wait to share them with you.

In preparation for CAST, I gathered sneak peeks from some of the breeders to give you a taste of what’s to come in California. Here’s a preview!

HEMP PRODUCTION

As a commercial crop, hemp is still working through growing pains. Growers need to thoroughly understand this crop and what it needs throughout the growing cycle to reach a successful harvest, including keeping plants healthy and clean.

Hemp Extension specialist at Purdue University, Marguerite Bolt, discusses common problems she helps growers with and gives helpful advice on how to grow healthy hemp from start to harvest. GPN’s special section on hemp production starts here.

THE GARDEN CENTER SHOW

The Garden Center Show has announced a strategic trade show partnership with Lawn & Garden Retailer, a sister publication of GPN. They will join forces to create a leading expo and conference that offers unparalleled opportunities for industry professionals, independent garden centers, associated specialty retailers, suppliers, manufacturers and wholesalers.

Find more details here. This synergy will bring together the strengths of both organizations, enhancing the overall experience for attendees and exhibitors, so you don’t want to miss it.
