American Horticultural Society receives $5M endowment gift
The American Horticultural Society (AHS) announced a $5 million endowment gift from longtime board member Marcia Zech during its annual gala on Sept. 21, 2024, in Alexandria, Virginia. Zech’s contribution aims to secure the organization’s long-term financial stability.

The gift is donor-restricted and will remain vested, with the goal of attracting additional contributions to reach an overall $10 million endowment. Jane Diamantis, a former AHS board member, and her husband George were the first to contribute, donating $75,000.
Zech, who served on the board for 13 years, received the AHS Gold Medal for her service. She played a key role in preserving AHS’s 26-acre River Farm headquarters and previously donated $1 million in 2021 to prevent its sale.
“Beyond her significant financial support, Marcia embodies legendary status through her passion, strategic insight, wisdom, and kindness,” said Suzanne Laporte, president and CEO of the AHS.
Zech retired from the board in June.
