Fall Zinnias Receive Texas Superstar Designation
Texas Superstar board members have recognized marylandica types of fall zinnias for their disease-resistant “mounds of color” that last until frost when planted in late summer. Zinnia marylandica include the Profusion and Zahara series, which grow 12 to 18 inches tall with individual flowers as large as 2½ inches in diameter. Texas Superstars, tested by AgriLife Research and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service horticulturists, must perform well for consumers and growers and be easy to propagate. Marylandica types tend to be more compact or bushier than standard zinnias and are ideal for mixed borders, beds, cutting gardens and containers. They are resistant to diseases such as powdery mildew. For more information on this Texas Superstar or the program, visit www.texassuperstar.com.
