Fig wins woody category at IPM Essen
Fignomenal Fig earns top honors at IPM Essen for compact edible genetics. See why growers are adding it and explore the full details.
The 2026 IPM Essen Novelty Showcase recognized eight new plant introductions across six categories, with 42 entries submitted by 27 exhibitors.

Ficus ‘Fignomenal’ fruit
Among the winners, ‘Fignomenal’ fig (Ficus carica ‘PT-DF-14’) was selected in the woody ornamental category, drawing attention from greenhouse growers, retailers and breeders seeking compact fruiting options for container and urban markets.
The fig was bred by Lloyd Traven of Peace Tree Farm and is marketed through Concept Plants. According to the breeder, the plant originated from a naturally occurring branch mutation that showed a compact growth habit and heavy fruit set. Traven said the original plant has remained in a 10-inch container for five years and measures about 36 inches tall and wide.
The plant produces medium-sized figs with dark brown skin and pink-red flesh. It is self-fertile and can fruit in a northern climate, making it suitable for greenhouse finishing, patio sales and specialty edible programs. The breeder said the plant can produce fruit from spring through summer under appropriate conditions and is intended to remain in containers.
For growers, the variety offers a combination of ornamental value and edible production, creating opportunities for mixed retail programs and higher-margin container crops.
“Being selected in the woody ornamental category at IPM Essen is a tremendous honor,” said Lloyd Traven, breeder of ‘Fignomenal’ fig at Peace Tree Farm.
The IPM Essen Novelty Showcase highlights new genetics with commercial potential for the global horticulture industry and is considered a benchmark for emerging plant trends.
