Floral Plant Growers Introduces Retail Recycling ProgramSource: Floral Plant Growers

Floral Plant Growers, LLC, recently implemented a consumer recycling program for horticultural plastics for its retail accounts during the spring season 2010.

The company is encouraging customers to return their empty plastic packs, pots, and trays to designated recycling carts at participating stores across the upper Midwest. Floral Plant Growers will pick up the full carts and arrange for recycling of the various types of horticultural plastics. Most of the plastic will be reground and used to make new materials for future use.

For more than 30 years, Floral Plant Growers has been reusing and recycling materials used in their own greenhouse production. In the late ’80s, the company started focusing on plastic recycling: To reduce the waste stream, FPG then recycled about 20,000 pounds of polystyrene plastics per year. In the past three years, the company has also started recycling polypropylene plastics. In 2008, polyethylene and HDPE plastics (poly films like greenhouse coverings) were the last remaining plastics added to FPG’s recycling efforts.

Currently, Floral Plant Growers saves more than 60,000 pounds of plastic from landfills every year. With the addition of the retail recycling program, FPG expects that number to increase significantly. For more information, visit FPG’s website, www.natbeauty.com.
