HRI redirects $250,000 for Phytophthora research

The Horticultural Research Institute (HRI) announced that $250,000 in federal funds have been reallocated to address the growing threat of Phytophthora austrocedri, a pathogen threatening key plant species in the horticulture industry. The funds, provided by the USDA’s Agricultural Research Service (ARS), will support efforts to study and manage the disease, which primarily affects plants in the Cupressaceae family, including cypress and juniper.

The pathogen has been detected in two Oregon nurseries, sparking concern over its potential spread. It poses a risk to both commercial horticulture and natural ecosystems. The research will focus on understanding the pathogen’s biology, transmission, and management practices to prevent further outbreaks.

HRI is collaborating with experts to develop best management practices for nurseries, including irrigation management and potential chemical treatments. “This funding allows us to explore ways to protect both the industry and natural landscapes,” said Tim Rinehart, ARS research leader.

The project aims to provide actionable recommendations for growers, ensuring they have the tools needed to protect plants from Phytophthora austrocedri.
