Huisman Chrysanten has integrated the Philips GrowWise Control System from Signify with Hoogendoorn’s IIVO climate computer.

This integration allows the grower to control the intensity and spectrum of their Philips LEDs based on crop needs and energy prices, reducing energy consumption by 20% and increasing light levels by 40%.

Philips LEDThe setup, installed over 4.8 hectares, allows Huisman to dim the 200 μmol/m²/s light between 10% and 100% and apply far-red treatments for optimal chrysanthemum growth.

“Our dimmable installation with far-red controllability and the integration of the GrowWise control system in our climate computer gives us flexibility,” said Edwin Huisman, partner at Huisman Chrysanten.

In 2022, half of the farm’s HPS lights were replaced with dimmable Philips GreenPower LED modules, with the remainder upgraded in 2023. The new system enables Huisman to adjust lighting based on energy prices, optimizing costs and efficiency.

The farm’s electricity needs are primarily met by its own CHP, with additional power sourced from the grid when prices are favorable. The far-red LEDs are used at the end of the day to ensure the chrysanthemums achieve the desired stem length.

“This dynamic lighting approach allows us to better match lighting to our energy regime and the price fluctuations in energy from the grid,” Huisman added.

The intelligent lighting system offers potential for future optimization, allowing dynamic, color-adjustable LED installations to respond to changing environmental factors and reduce energy costs.
