‘Bubbly Wine’ weigela earns european plant awards

‘Bubbly Wine’ weigela, part of the Proven Winners ColorChoice collection, was recently recognized with two international honors in Poland and Belgium.

At the GREEN IS LIFE International Trade Fair in Warsaw, held Sept. 4 to 6, ‘Bubbly Wine’ won the Gold Medal in the Plant Novelties Competition. Judges cited its unique foliage, strong growth and versatility for landscape use.

Later in the month, the variety was named Best Plant of the Show at the Fête des Plantes à La Feuillerie in Celles, Belgium, during the Sept. 20 to 21 event.

“’Bubbly Wine’ stood out immediately – it’s distinctly different from traditional weigelas, both in overall habit and foliage character,” the judges said.

Bred by Jeff Good in southeast Michigan, ‘Bubbly Wine’ is a variegated selection of ‘Fine Wine’ weigela. It features foliage in shades of yellow, green and burgundy, with deep pink blooms in late spring. The compact shrub reaches 1.5 to 3 feet tall and wide and can adapt to full sun or partial shade.

For growers, the plant adds a stable and consistent selection to meet market demand for compact, colorful shrubs with landscape versatility. The new awards follow a Gold Medal in the novelty category at Plantarium in Boskoop, Netherlands, in 2024.
