Christmas in Spring? By Tim Hodson

The Home Depot is looking to increase its spring sales by duplicating and expanding on the success of its post-Thanksgiving Black Friday sales.

Six years ago, the home improvement retailer introduced its own “Spring Black Friday” as a one-day in-store promotion to kick off the gardening season for consumers. But now the company is going beyond a single day of deep discounts and sales in its lawn and garden department and offering big deals online too.

Beginning last week, the Home Depot launched its Cyber Week promotion that will occur over two weeks (depending on store locations) to sell outdoor living and gardening products. While live goods are not the focus of Cyber Week, the company is hoping to continue to grow its e-commerce sales.

The Home Depot’s online sales have been a strong performer for the company – growing 37 percent in 2014 to $3.8 billion.

Kevin Hofmann, Home Depot’s president of online operations told Bloomberg Business, “We had a great response on our traditional Cyber Week events. That triggered us to say Thanksgiving time isn’t the only time customers want a deal, so let’s extend it into our peak selling season.”

The Home Depot’s chief rival, Lowe’s is also expected to offer in-store Black Friday-like sales this spring, however, it remains to be seen if the No. 2 home improvement retailer will offer major online deals.

Are you ready for Christmas in Spring?
