Do You Have a Battle Plan?By Tim Hodson

Battling greenhouse pests is probably one of the biggest challenges growers face.

To help you fight that battle, on Sept. 25, GPN will present a free, one-hour webinar on “Best Management Practices for Pest Control in Ornamentals.” The webinar will take place at 2 p.m. EDT. Our presenter will be Roger Styer of Styer’s Horticultural Consulting.

Controlling the major pests in ornamentals, such as aphids, spider mites, thrips and whiteflies, is a lot more than just spraying a bunch of pesticides and hoping you get some control.

During the webinar, Roger will cover what goes into a solid pest control program for any type of pest you may have. Areas to cover will include sanitation, scouting and monitoring, and knowing how to recognize what pests you have.

Since resistance issues and phytotoxicity problems continue to show up every year, growers need to know what chemicals to rotate, how to properly read labels and how long to store products.

Many problems with ineffective control are the result of improper spraying and drenching techniques.  Finally, the use of biocontrols is becoming more prevalent, but growers need to know the chemical compatibility of pesticides used on any biocontrols on their crops.

Styer, operates his own independent consulting company helping growers be more successful with all aspects of growing ornamentals. He earned his PhD in Horticultural Sciences from the University of Florida. Prior to creating his consulting company, he worked for George J. Ball, Ball Seed Co. and Pan American Seed Co., conducting research on flower seed production and quality and plug production and technology.

We have additional webinars on plant growth regulators and controlled environment agriculture scheduled for later this fall also. Stay tuned to GPN Weekly for more details on those webinars.
