- Since 2011, has mentored eight graduate students in his own program at NCSU, many of whom are now also in or planning to enter academia.
- Instrumental in researching the uses of alternative substrates for greenhouse production. He has conducted research on using wood chips as a substitute for perlite in mixes.

Makes Good Use of His Time: “My super power is napping! I can sleep almost anywhere at any time, even standing up, and am 100 percent refreshed after only 5 to 7 minutes and ready to go again for hours of activity.”
