One More Assignment By Tim Hodson

Even though classes are out for most colleges students, they still have one more assignment if they plan on applying for the 2012 Syngenta Scholarship program.

And their assignments are due this Friday, June 1.

Earlier this spring, Syngenta announced it would be offering two $7,500 horticulture-related scholarships in 2012. The Glenn Goldsmith Breeding Excellence Scholarship is a $7,500 award for a student working toward a degree in plant breeding. The Goldsmith Seeds Floriculture Business Advancement Scholarship will award $7,500 to a student working toward a degree in ornamental horticulture business.

If you know a student that might be interested in applying for either of these scholarships, please let them know that time is running out and the MUST APPLY by this Friday!

Click here for details on how to apply for these prestigious scholarships.

The winning students will be announced to the public next month at OFA Short Course in COlumbus, Ohio.

Hot Times at the Garden Center

Over the Memorial Day Weekend, I had a chance to stop in at Wallace’s Garden Center in Bettendorf, Iowa and visit with one of GPN’s 40 Under 40 recipients Kate Terrell.

We had record high temperatures (mid-90s!!) in the Midwest this weekend and it felt like the Fourth of July, NOT Memorial Day. But the heat didn’t stop shoppers from hitting the garden center. Their parking lot was packed when I got there at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning.

I asked Kate how the 2012 season has been and she said she was really pleased so far. She said they definitely saw increases in the edibles category as well as trees and shrubs this year! Another category that was selling well was miniature plants thanks to the popularity of fairy gardening.

I posted a few photos from my visit on the Lawn & Garden Retailer Facebook page.
