Vertical Farming: The Future of Ag By Jasmina Dolce

According to a new report, “Vertical Farming Market by Growth Mechanism, Functional Mechanism and by Geography – Global Forecast to 2022,” the vertical farming market is expected to reach $6 billion by 2022.

The factors driving the growth of the vertical farming market include high-quality food with no use of pesticides, less dependency on the weather for production, growing urban population, increase in year-round production of crops and reduced impact on the environment. But the primary reason for adopting vertical farming technology is it will help increase crop production without increasing additional land area.

According to the report, hydroponics is expected to grow at the highest rate between 2016 and 2022. This growth is attributed to the fact that hydroponic technologies are a less complex method to implement. And, growing crops indoor using hydroponics eliminates the use of equipment used in traditional farming, reducing air pollution significantly.

The report also claims that lighting technology is expected to lead the vertical farming market, in large part due to traditional lighting systems being replaced with LED lighting systems. More farmers are shifting to LED lighting because of its high efficiency and low heat generation.

Is your business adopting any vertical farming technologies? Do you have questions regarding this booming category? If so, you can check out the full report here.
