Tracking Today’s Consumers By Tim Hodson

Consumer spending habits have changed quite a bit over the last decade. But how have they changed when it comes to buying plants and flowers?

To help get a better understanding of the situation, the American Floral Endowment (AFE) and the Society of American Florists (SAF) have released a new study that details the purchasing habits of today’s flower-buying consumers.

It is the first time in more than a decade that this type of study has been done.

The Consumer Tracking Study reveals details such as types of flowers purchased, amount spent, for whom and what occasions, satisfaction levels and more.

Over the course of the study, which took place from January to December 2016, more than 43,000 interviews were conducted with adults making one or more floral purchases.

On the first business day of each month, interviews were conducted yielding information based on the following questions: Where was the floral purchase made? What kind of floral products were purchased? What was the reason or occasion for the purchase?

The information in the study has the potential to help growers and retailers maximize their opportunities and sales. The study was funded by the Floral Marketing Research Fund and is available for purchase.
