3 viruses detected in Washington hemp

Beet curly top virus, Citrus yellow vein-associated virus and Hop latent viroid in industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa) in Washington State have been reported.

Virus-like symptoms were seen in several cultivars of industrial hemp in two fields in central Washington in 2021 and 2022. Reported plants showed a range of symptoms. Young plants had severe stunting with shortened internodes and reduced flower mass with young leaves of infected plants showing light green to total yellowing with twisted margins. Older plants presented fewer foliar symptoms like mosaic, mottling and mild chlorosis on a few branches with curling of mature leaves.

The details were published on The American Phytopathological Society website on Feb. 21, 2023. Read the full report here.
