Kentucky State University Farm to Host Organic Hemp Field Day

The Organic Association of Kentucky (OAK) has organized an organic hemp field day at Kentucky State University’s Harold R. Benson Research and Demonstration Farm in Frankfort. The field day will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 18, and is open to all.

Pre-registration is with OAK is required with a price of $5 for OAK members and $10 for non-members. Register online at oak-ky.org/field-days, or by phone at 502-517-9629.

Shawn Lucas from KSU, Doris Hamilton from the Kentucky Department of Agriculture and Tony Silvernail with OAK will discuss regulatory issues, including legal status and certification requirements, as well as production concerns of growing organic hemp in Kentucky, including genetics, plant propagation, fertility, weed/pest management and more.

The following week, on Thursday, Sept. 26th from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., OAK will also be hosting a field day at the University of Kentucky Horticulture Research Farm (4320 Emmert Farm Lane, Lexington, KY 40514) on Fertility, Cover Crops and Soil Testing in organic production systems. Rachel Rudolph, Extension vegetable specialist) and Krista Jacobsen (sustainable agriculture professor) will discuss fertility management using and choosing among manure, compost, cover crops and other organic production inputs for improving soil organic matter, conserving soil nutrients or managing weeds in open field and high tunnel production systems.
