Perennial plant spending trends show strong outlook
Spending on perennial plants remains strong heading into 2025, according to Proven Winners’ 2025 Perennial Survey. More than 14,000 gardeners across the U.S. and Canada shared insights on purchasing behaviors and trends.
The survey found 64% of respondents bought perennials multiple times annually, with 73% spending as much or more in 2024 compared to past years. Quality and color were top purchase drivers, with 43% citing quality as the most important factor and 86% valuing color. Purple was the most popular choice, favored by 42%.
Spring remains the dominant planting season, but fall sales are also gaining traction. Nearly half of respondents reported buying perennials in September or October.
Independent garden centers remain the primary retail source, with 81% of respondents purchasing from one in 2024. Additionally, 73% relied on these local centers for information on new varieties.
Social media plays a growing role in influencing younger consumers. The survey reported that 61% of gardeners aged 18 to 30 and 64% aged 31 to 45 use social platforms to learn about perennials, compared to only 32% of respondents over 66.
Echinacea, salvia and hosta topped the list of favorite perennials.
