Spring Meadow Nursery adds NewGen boxwood to lineup

Spring Meadow Nursery has partnered with Saunders Brothers to add the NewGen boxwood line to its Proven Winners ColorChoice Shrubs collection, offering growers new disease- and pest-resistant evergreen varieties.

NewGen boxwood, developed by Saunders Brothers and introduced in 2018, has undergone extensive testing for resistance to boxwood blight and boxwood leafminer. The varieties have proven successful in the Mid-Atlantic and are now available through Spring Meadow’s grower network and licensed NewGen growers.

The first three varieties joining the collection are:

‘NewGen Independence’ buxus has glossy foliage, compact growth, with good resistance to boxwood blight and leafminer. USDA Zones 5b–8.

‘NewGen Freedom’ buxus has slightly faster growth, with good disease resistance. USDA Zones 5–8.

‘NewGen Liberty Belle’ buxus is petite and shade-tolerant, with superior blight resistance. USDA Zones 5b–8.

“NewGen boxwood aligns perfectly with the Proven Winners ColorChoice Shrubs commitment to offering superior woody plant varieties that outperform conventional selections,” said Jeremy Deppe, Spring Meadow’s general manager.

Bennett Saunders, general manager of Saunders Genetics, noted the companies’ shared commitment to innovation in horticulture as key to the partnership.

Current NewGen stock will continue to ship under existing labels, while new liners will transition to the white Proven Winners ColorChoice containers to increase visibility at retail.
