Fafard Completes Hybrid Research Project, Releases Germinating Mix in BalesSource: Fafard Inc.

Conrad Fafard Inc. recently completed a six-month research project testing advanced potting media formulations. The results, which were presented last week during OFA Short Course in Columbus, Ohio, will help the company develop new products including professional mixes and custom additives.

The project was divided into three phases to test how different raw materials, soil amendments and additives function in different greenhouse settings. The first phase focused on unrooted cuttings and seedlings, the second on finished plants, and the third on garden soil or container garden media.

The researchers conducted 311 different experiments, evaluating 37 plant types at 27 greenhouses in 13 states. Due to the large scope of the project, Fafard hired 13 interns, or research leaders, and trained them in grower communication; propagation, production and retail cropping; experimental design; data collection and entry; photography; and reporting.

Fafard has also released a new germinating mix formulated especially for plug and liner production. Fafard Young Plant Mix features superfine, horticultural-grade peat and comes in compressed bales.

The new mix contains peat, perlite and vermiculite, and is designed for direct seeding or rooting cuttings in 1.25-inch trays or smaller or Ellepot systems of 30 mm or smaller. It is available in 110-cubic-foot, 64-cubic-foot, 55-cubic-foot and 3.8-cubic-foot compressed bales.
