New Guinea Impatiens

Mandarin Star and Deep Purple Star are two new additions to the Petticoat series of New Guinea impatiens. They are early flowering and are ideal for unique presentations. Rooted cuttings should be watered well before transplanting. Initial watering is improved if the finish container root medium is moistened before transplanting.

Light levels should be 3,500 to 4,500 foot-candles. Use a growing temperature of 72 to 78° days and 68 to 70° nights with good circulation for best growth.

A liquid feed of 50- to 100-ppm nitrogen with a complete fertilizer should be used for the first three weeks after transplanting liners. Fertilizer can be increased to 150- to 200-ppm as the root system develops. Plants should be kept moist but not overwatered. Avoid water stress as severe drying will result in plant injury.

Pinching and growth regulator applications are not necessary when adequate plant spacing and light are provided. Petticoat was developed for compact habit and good branching. Growth regulators and cool mornings are only required early in production.
