Backyards are Buzzing!

By now, you are very well aware of the controversy surrounding the declining populations of pollinators. The issue has gotten a lot of media attention, and gardeners are reacting.

In response to this growing concern, the National Pollinator Garden Network launched a nationwide campaign last week – the Million Pollinator Garden Challenge.

Designed to accelerate growing efforts across the country, the Network – which is comprised of 1 million active gardeners and 15,000 schoolyard gardens – is launching the challenge in support of President Obama’s call to reverse the decline of pollinating insects, such as honey bees and native bees along with monarch butterflies.

“Through the Million Pollinator Garden Challenge, anyone in urban, suburban, [or] rural communities can make a difference by planting for pollinators and joining together in an effort to create and enhance one million pollinator gardens,” said Laurie Adams, executive director of the Pollinator Partnership. “The need is huge to get backyards buzzing.”

Gardeners responding to this call out will be in search of pollinator-friendly plants at retail. Do you anticipate this plant category to grow? Do you plan on adding more bee-loving varieties to your production? Are you looking for specific varieties that you can promote as pollinator attractants? If so, here are some pollinator-friendly plants that will keep gardeners’ backyards buzzing:

Nemesia PenPals ‘Berry Summer Mix’ (Plant Haven)

Lavender ‘Bandera Purple’ (Kieft Seed)

Agastache ‘Acapulco Deluxe Peach’ (Green Fuse Botanicals)

Verbena ‘Hurricane Pink’ (Westflowers)

Cuphea ‘Vermillionaire’ (Proven Winners)

Salvia ‘Black & Bloom’ (Ball FloraPlant)
