Battlefield Farms Receives MPS-GAP Certification

Battlefield Farms in Rapidan, Virginia, received it MPS-GAP certification in November. Battlefield has been working with MPS since 2010. As an MPS-A certified grower the logical step for them has been to take it to the next level.

The majority of sales for Battlefield Farms is the Northeast region of the U.S. mostly to big box retailers. With the increasing requirements of retailers on use of chemicals and the growing attention to production processes MPS-GAP is a perfect fit for Battlefield Farms.

Since 2016 Battlefield Farms, which grows perennials and annuals in 45 acres of greenhouse and 27 acres of outdoor/shade area, has been working with MPS-HCS to implement the MPS-GAP requirements.

The choice for MPS-GAP was made to stay accountable in regard to process efficiency and improve reducing the environmental impact, explained Travis Higginbotham, director of research & development at Battlefield Farms.

According to Higginbotham, Battlefield Farms does not want to go one year without improving. He says with every single process, from step 1 to done, realized and acknowledged, fully, you can make practical, economic, environmental and cultural changes that end up having a significant positive impact. With the focus of MPS-GAP on these aspects, that goal has been achieved.

After working with MPS-HCS on the preparations for the certification audit Battlefield Farms has obtained the MPS-GAP certification in November 2017. However with the certification achieved it does not stop for Battlefield Farms. For 2018 the company is already looking where further improvements can take place.
