Mixing It Up in 2019 By Tim Hodson

As you make your plans for 2019, have you created a menu of mixed combinations that you plan to grow? If you haven’t, be sure to check out the November issue of GPN.

Becky Lacy has written an article that takes a look at how growers can really capitalize on the consumer demand for mixed combinations.

In “Growing Successful Combos Using Color and Best Practices,” she discusses some of the trends and opportunities that you need to know about and take advantage of to help increase your sales. Becky says color selection and following proper culture guidelines are the top two ingredients to ensure your success.

A couple of the trends she identifies include growing hanging baskets for small spaces; developing tropical mixes to create an indoor oasis; and growing drought-tolerant and easy to maintain combos for today’s busy consumer.

Selecting and growing the right varieties for your mixes is crucial. According to Becky, regionality, timing, vigor, seasonality and longevity at retail are just some of the factors you need to consider when creating your combination recipes.

The article also has a sidebar on sales tips for retailers. Color is key when it comes to retail. How are you making your color decisions for your mixed containers? These tips will give you a little more insight into those choices.
