Plantpeddler Announces Top Picks from ’20 Variety Day

Plantpeddler’s annual Variety Day, took place Aug. 7, in Cresco, Iowa. In addition to Variety Day, the company is celebrating its 40th Anniversary this year.

The trials took place at the company’s new site, completed the spring of 2020, and represents an investment in grower success by “Testing the Best in the Midwest.”

The event showcased nearly 1,500 varieties of vegetative annual in large containers, hanging baskets and beds from a global array of breeding companies.

Growers, breeders, brokers, and retailers spent the day evaluating the Trial Gardens, attending seminars  by industry professionals, and touring the greenhouses.

Presenters included:

  • Broch Martindale, Corteva
  • Elizabeth Burdett, Selecta
  • Mike Faber and Ivan Izzo, BFG
  • Nathan Sell, Dümmen Orange
  • Christopher  Currey, Iowa State University

Participants had the opportunity to vote on their top three varieties.

The winner this year was Bracteantha ‘Granvia Gold’ (see photo) from Suntory Flowers. In 2019 the variety came in seventh place but was the overwhelming first  choice for 2020.

The next top pick was Dümmen Orange’s begonia ‘I’Conia Upright Fire’ followed by begonia ‘Encanto Pink’ from Beekenkamp.

The event was made even more enjoyable by the perfect weather, outstanding color in the gardens, with food and networking under the big tent.

Plantpeddler’s Poinsettia Variety Day is scheduled to take place Dec. 3, 2020. The next Plantpeddler Variety Day is scheduled for August 6, 2021.
